The short version

Because of that, the notice you saw is exactly that: a notice. Nothing on this site is withheld until you answer it, and accepting does not switch anything on today. We ask because we would rather have your answer on record before we ever add something that needs it.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, which is then sent back to that website on every later request. That round trip is what makes cookies useful for remembering a login, and also what makes them useful for following people between sites.

Local storage is the other common way to keep something in a browser. It stays on your device and is not attached to requests, so the website only sees it if its own code goes looking. That is what we use.

If your browser blocks local storage, nothing breaks — the notice simply appears again next time, because there is nowhere to record your answer.

What we do not use

• No analytics of any kind, including self-hosted analytics.
• No advertising or remarketing tags, and no conversion pixels.
• No social media buttons, embeds or share widgets.
• No session recording, heat-mapping or scroll tracking.
• No A/B testing or personalisation tools.
• No fingerprinting, and no attempt to identify you across sites.

Third-party content

There is none. The typeface is served from our own server rather than a font service, the images are files we host ourselves, and there are no videos, maps, chat widgets or content delivery networks anywhere on the site.

This matters because embedded third-party content is the usual way cookies arrive on a site that did not intend to set any. With nothing embedded, there is nothing to arrive.

Managing cookies in your browser

Even though we do not set any, it is worth knowing where the controls are. Every major browser lets you see what a site has stored and delete it, usually under Settings, then Privacy. Clearing site data for this domain removes the one entry described above.

Blocking cookies and storage across the board is entirely your call and will not stop this site working.

If we ever add something that does set a cookie, this page will say what it is, what it does and how long it lasts — before it is switched on, and only for people who accepted. The date at the top tells you when this page last changed.
